Guided Tour

Octagonal Room

On seven out of the eight walls of this room hang full-length portraits in dusty gold frames. If you push the frame of the portrait on the wall opposite the door, a small hole is revealed in the panelling. Peering through this hole gives a view of part of a corridor, whose walls are covered in pictures of birds and three carvings of cacti in bloom. Three doors are also visible, the nearest and central of the three being stained black and with an enormous white cat painted on it. This is the door to the Countess Gertrude's bedchamber.
