About Mervyn Peake |
Halfway along a passage leading away from the Octagonal Room a door leads into an empty room. It is one of many unused rooms in the castle, some of which are filled with the detritus of decades, or even centuries, while others, such as this one, are empty save for dust.
This room is of no significance in itself, other than being the room in which Steerpike, after fleeing from the oppression of the kitchens, was imprisoned by Flay.
If you lean out of the room's only window -- be very careful, as the drop outside is precipitous -- and look up, you will see the twenty feet of wall which Steerpike climbed to escape to the sloping slate roof, aided over the last eight feet by the half-dead creeper of ivy which still clings to the wall.
